Day 9, Thursday, September 26th, 2002

Took Mikey to the Samoa National Recreation Area beach, next to the Coast Guard Station. Absolutely deserted. Fairly thick fog, no one else there. Fantastic. Mikey loved it. The only official off-leash area in Eureka. Then packed up the RV and went into Eureka to walk around. Beautiful victorian homes in the old Eureka Town area. Still foggy.

Followed HW 101 through the Humbolt Redwood State Park, along a road known as the "Avenue of the Giants". Magnificent. Alongside flowed one of the forks of the Eel River. Just as beautiful. And yes, we did drive through a Redwood! The original one, the "Shrine"! The region is somewhat higher elevation, away from the coast and the fog, making it much drier. Several areas of old burn could be seen from the road.

We've hunkered down for the night in the only RV camp in Willits, CA.  It's partly permanent trailer park, complete with chained pit bull, and 3 dogs from separate sites which ran up and aggressively approached Mikey, who acted like a big boy, growled only, then moved along with me.  That, of course, all took place where the scent of the "medicinal purposes" stuff was thick in the air.  What's amazing is there is the biggest RV, complete with living room with 2 lazy boy chairs and big screen tv set up between us and them......  I wonder if they've been out of their RV since setting it up.

Tomorrow, on to the region around Clear Lake, CA.
